Djavan is a popular singer/songwriter in Brazil, combining the rhythmic influence of his homeland with the popular music forms of America. One of his biggest hits, Flor de Lis features a narrator whose world has been turned upside down when a romance ends. Despite the forlorn lyrics, the samba groove makes it difficult to brood too long.
lyrics
Valei me deus, e o fim do nosso amor
Pra essa moca me fazer feliz
E o destino nao quis
God, help me, our love is over.
Forgive me, I know I did something wrong,
But I don't know what exactly made everything change so suddenly.
Where did I go wrong?
I only know that I loved, and I loved, and I loved like no one else.
Can it be that my mistake was
To give my heart to her with all my soul
So she could make me happy?
But fate did not want to see me be as are roots to a lily flower,
And so I watched our love turn to dust, to dust,
Dying in the coldness of her beauty.
And the garden of my life wilted or died.
On that same plant where she once blossomed
Not even a single daisy has grown.

How could I not like a fellow alum of both U of Miami and CalArts?! Really creative, he's not afraid to push the boundaries in any direction. The results are always fascinating. Greg Byers
