Le Grand Tango

from Final Master's Recital by Greg Byers

/

about

Le Grand Tango was written late in Piazzolla’s life, and was dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich. It is his tribute to the classical cello sonata, blending Western European traditions with his own style, nuevo tango. This subgenre is known for blending customary tango with jazz and classical elements. While Piazzolla is considered one of the supreme tango composers, his music is incredibly difficult to dance to. Regardless, the rhythmic sensuality of this work connotes a couple elegantly gliding through the room, their dance one of intensely simmering passion.
